Electricity is the key ingredient for an accelerated economic growth and is considered vital for nation’s overall development. The real challenge in the power sector today lies in efficient management of the distribution sector.

1. System Strengthening

GoI has launched “IPDS” for Urban/ Semi-urban areas. PFC is the Nodal agency. Scope of work includes strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution network, metering, provision for solar panels on Govt. buildings, IT enablement works etc. Sanction for an amount of Rs.157.80 Crores had been communicated from PFC during March-2016 for the above works excluding IT enablement works for 29 statutory towns in Mangalore, Udupi, Shivamogga & Chikamagaluru Circles of MESCOM. At present the said works have been completed.

Further additional financial assistance for implementation of IPDS in Mangalore, Udupi & Shivamogga Circles of MESCOM has been communicated during February-2018 for a cost of Rs.9.80 Crores. At present the said works have also been completed.

M/s. PFC has communicated financial assistance during December-18 for implementation of 6 Nos.of GI substations under IPDS for cost of Rs.39.48 Crores in three Circles namely Mangalore, Udupi & Chikkamagaluru. Accordingly works have been awarded during November-2019 in Mangalore Circle covering 2Nos. of towns Mangaluru & Bantwal and Udupi Circle covering 2Nos. of towns, Udupi & Saligrama. At present these works are under progress.

2. IT Phase -2

Under IPDS, a flagship programme of GoI, MESCOM -Karnataka has taken up IT- Phase-2 Implementation works for Rs 4.76 Crs in 18 towns. IT includes GIS Survey, Data collection and Data recovery and IT infrastructures.

Due to implementation of IT it is easy to monitor, analysis of the AT&C losses, power outages, consumer complaint, new connection data and reliability indices of power distribution system. It is beneficial for strategic planning for future, it will play crucial role to provide reliable and quality of power to consumer.
